Unprofessional and price list problem
In gathering pricing information for a member of ours we called McIlvaine Funeral Home. It took 3 phone calls to have someone call us back. When Ms. McIlvaine did, she refused to provide any pricing to us over the phone, or to email or fax their General Price List. She stated “it is against the law for funeral directors to know one another’s prices†and that she would only provide it directly to a family.
FYI: Federal law requires that funeral directors give price information to anyone who calls, regardless if they are pre-need, at-need, or whether they are consumer, competing funeral home, FTC inspector, or funeral consumers alliance.
While we cannot comment on McIlvaine Funeral Home’s pricing competitiveness or the quality of funeral services provided, their lack of professionalism and transparency cause concern.
ADDITION SEPT 2016:
In July 2016 Ms. McIlvaine mailed us a copy of her General Price List along with a letter of apology for not being forthright with pricing information when we called. She said that she really believed that she did not need to share that information and stated “I was wrong.†We appreciate her acknowledgment and cooperation.

Funeral homes and cremation providers offer a wide range of services to assist families with funeral arrangements. Full-service funeral homes offer everything from burial services to cremation services. They often sell caskets, urns, and other memorial products. Their cremation prices are generally higher than direct cremation providers.
Direct cremation providers often operate out of simpler offices and work directly with the crematory to provide lower-cost cremation services for families in the community. Since they have lower overhead costs, cremation costs and immediate or simple burials many be less expensive than full-service funeral homes.
