Obituary

Tom Montgomery Drew III passed away April 20, 2021 in his home in Harlingen, TX.
Tom is survived by his son Brian Drew and wife Jennifer and his three beloved grandchildren Troy, Jake and Grace and his former wife Anna Vestal. Tom is also survived by his sister, Ruth Fowl and her husband William and his two nephews Steven Chandler and Clark Chandler and their families. He was preceded in death by his parents Tom Montgomery Drew Jr. and Justa Louise Peters Drew.
Tom was a great father, grandfather and friend. He was a prolific Sports Journalist. After graduating from Texas Tech University, he enlisted in the army as a Journalist. In the 1960s he moved to the Valley and became Sports Editor at the Edinburg Review. He joined The Brownsville Herald in 1969 as Sports Editor. From there, he jumped to the Valley Morning Star in 1972 as Sports Editor first and and was Sports Director of Valley Freedom Newspapers from 1974 to 1991. One of the achievements he was most proud of was winning Sports Writer of the Year in 1992 from the Texas High School Coaches Association. He was inducted into the Rio Grande Valley Sports Hall of Fame in 1995. His favorite place to spend his time and socialize with his friends was at the Elks Lodge 1889. We know he will be greatly missed by his friends at the Elks Lodge and we know everyone there was like a second family to him.
Due to the pandemic, we will hold a private service for immediate family. In lieu of flowers, we would ask that donations be made to the Harlingen Elks lodge for their charitable endeavors.
